When Bob contacted me to tell me of his intention to publish a book on his local patch, West Ham Park in London’s east end, I was immediately impressed. Anyone who watches a patch in the middle of urbanity that on first impressions may seem unpromising, keeps records of his sightings, takes photos of the birds that grace his patch and then chooses to write a book about the birds of his patch, deserves a hearty doff!
His book is a handy little guide to the regular birds of West Ham Park, attractively designed with photographs taken by Bob all within the park.
The Birds of West Ham Park should serve as an inspiration to all birders. We should all be out there discovering new areas, urban or otherwise, to study birdlife. Having a local patch will eventually lead you to finding yourself involved in its conservation, and actively trying to make it more attractive to wildlife. You will relish your regular visits and the day something unusual turns up will fill you with pride. If you don’t believe me then read The Birds of West Ham Park. You will see the pride and love oozing from each page.
